Protect Yourself from ATM Fraud Tricks

08.25.10

The use of automated teller machine has become quite common among people. In fact using an ATM is a daily task performed by many. The easy access and convenient transaction system has encouraged more and more people to use ATM frequently. But using an ATM also involves risk to some extent.

There are some fraudulent practices that hit the ATM. The major practices are:

1.Traping the credit card

2.Recording the personal identification number and credit card number

Let’s have a look at how the thieves get away with the details.

Card Entrapment

The criminals get a thin piece of x-ray film cut in order to insert it into the same area where a customer inserts the card. The thin piece is shaped in such a way so that it can trap your card and prevent it from returning to you. It is quite obvious that the people who design these traps have technical knowledge of the automated teller machines. It is also the responsibility of the ATM owners to ensure the safety of the customers. Many times they get tempted to see an ad like low cost ATM machines for sale and immediately jump for it. But these cheap machines may not be very safe for use.

If your card has not returned to you after you have inserted it be very careful. Look for an x-ray film or clear plastic piece in the lip of the machine. Removing the piece will help you to get back your card.

Mini Camera

Mini cameras are concealed to record your personal details. If you see any plastic brochure holder placed right beside the keypad avoid using that ATM because such holders are never used by the banks.

Using an ATM may be quite convenient but be alert to protect yourself from ATM fraud tricks.
